Make a Self-Grading Quiz in Google Forms
Visit the Google Forms website and sign in with your Google account. Click “Blank Quiz” at the top of the page to get started.
Your quiz will display with a default title and a description box. Click to change the quiz title and optionally provide a description. On the top left, you can name your quiz file differently to make it easy to spot on the Google Forms page.

A default question will appear when you begin creating your quiz. Start by selecting the question type from the drop-down list on the top right of the question. You can pick from almost a dozen question types like short answer, multiple choice, and linear scale.
Next, enter your question. As an example, we’ll use a multiple-choice question. Here are the steps.
Select “Multiple Choice” in the question type drop-down list. Enter the question in the corresponding field.
Click “Option 1” to enter the first possible answer and then “Add Option” to enter additional possible answers. Mark the question as Required because we want all questions answered.
Click “Answer Key” to provide the correct answer(s) and optionally assign a point value. Click “Done” and this question is complete.
Insert Additional Questions
Each time you want to add a question, click the plus sign in the floating toolbar on the right. If you want to add a new section, click the two hollow lines at the bottom of the toolbar.
Then, follow the same process by selecting a question type, entering the question, and providing the correct answer(s).
Adjust Question Options
Some question types offer extra options. You can view these by clicking the three dots on the bottom right of the question. As examples, you can limit the length of short answer questions, add branching logic, and shuffle the answer options for multiple choice and checkbox questions.
As an example, we have a checkbox question where we want the respondent to choose the three correct answers. If they pick more or less than three, they’ll see a message. Here are the steps.
Click the three dots and choose “Response Validation.” Enter the condition, number, and message.
So we pick “Select Exactly,” enter the number “3,” and type our message, “Please select 3 answers.”
Now when a respondent answers the question, they will see the message unless they select exactly three answers.
Enable the Self-Grading Feature in Quiz Settings
When you finish creating your quiz, you have the option to adjust a few settings and must enable one to make it a self-grading quiz. Click the gear icon on the top right of the quiz to open the Settings.
Select the Quizzes tab. The top toggle should be enabled by default because you’re using the Blank Quiz template. If it’s not, be sure to turn it on.
Next, you can release the grade immediately, which makes it a true self-grading quiz. Respondents will see the results right away. If you prefer to wait until you do a manual review, you can choose that option instead.
Then, decide which items you want the respondents to see upon submission. These include missed questions, correct answers, and point values.
If you want to make other adjustments, you can select the General tab to collect emails and limit the number of responses. And on the Presentation tab, you can show a progress bar and enter a custom confirmation message.
Make sure to click “Save” at the bottom of the window after adjusting the settings.
Share the Quiz
Click “Send” on the top right to share your quiz. You can send a link via email, copy the link to share it yourself, grab the embed HTML, or share it on Facebook or Twitter.
View the Quiz Responses
Return to your quiz and click the “Responses” tab at the top to see the responses. You’ll see a number of responses indicated on the tab as well.
Use the options at the top of the Responses page for Summary, Question, and Individual to see details.
Summary shows you insights, frequently missed questions, and summaries of how the questions were answered. Question displays how each question was answered with the number of responses per answer. Individual lets you view every quiz one-by-one with its answers.
At the top of the Responses tab you can disable the toggle for Accepting Responses to close the quiz. You can also create a spreadsheet of responses in Google Sheets using the Sheets icon or click the three dots to download or print responses.
